Sustainability

Sustainability

Good products should not cost the planet.

At Dwell, sustainability is not a marketing checkbox. It is a genuine commitment that shapes every decision we make — from the mills we partner with, to the packaging your order arrives in, to the way we think about the long-term life of every product we sell.

We are not perfect. We are a growing business navigating the real complexities of sustainable manufacturing, and we will not pretend otherwise. But we are serious about doing better at every step, and we believe in being transparent about where we are and where we are headed.

Our Materials

Everything starts with what goes into the product. At Dwell, we use only materials that meet a strict set of criteria around environmental impact, worker safety, and long-term quality.

100% Natural Cotton All Dwell towels, robes, and bath mats are made from 100% natural cotton — a renewable, biodegradable fiber that does not shed microplastics into the water supply the way synthetic fabrics do. We specifically avoid cotton blends that use polyester or nylon fillers, which are common in lower-cost bath textiles and contribute significantly to microplastic pollution.

OEKO-TEX Certified Fabrics Our core fabric range is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, which means every component — thread, dye, finish — has been tested for harmful substances and found safe for human use and the environment. This certification is independently verified and renewed annually.

Responsible Dyeing Practices Color is one of the most environmentally impactful parts of textile production. We work exclusively with mills that use low-impact, water-based dyes and operate closed-loop water treatment systems — meaning dye wastewater is treated and recycled on-site rather than discharged into local waterways.

Our Supply Chain

We believe that sustainability includes the people who make our products, not just the materials they are made from.

Partnering with Responsible Mills All Dwell products are manufactured at mills in Portugal and Turkey that we have visited personally and vetted against our supplier code of conduct. We require fair wages, safe working conditions, and reasonable working hours as baseline requirements — not optional extras.

Long-Term Supplier Relationships We deliberately work with a small number of suppliers rather than constantly switching to find the cheapest option. Long-term relationships mean better quality control, more transparent practices, and a genuine partnership built on shared values rather than pure cost.

Reduced Air Freight We plan our production and inventory well in advance to avoid the need for air freight, which produces significantly more carbon emissions per shipment than sea freight. The vast majority of our products travel to the US by sea.

Our Packaging

We have worked hard to eliminate unnecessary packaging from every order.

  • All Dwell orders ship in 100% recycled cardboard boxes printed with water-based inks
  • We use paper-based tissue wrap instead of plastic poly bags
  • Our packing tape is paper-based and fully recyclable
  • We have eliminated all single-use plastic from our packaging entirely as of 2023
  • Product labels are printed on recycled card stock and attached with natural cotton string

We are currently working on a fully compostable mailer option for smaller orders and expect to introduce this by the end of 2025.

Durability as Sustainability

One of the most meaningful things we do for the environment is make products that last. A towel that falls apart after a year gets thrown away and replaced — which means double the resources, double the waste. A towel that holds up for five or ten years is inherently more sustainable than a cheap alternative, regardless of what it is made from.

This is why we never compromise on construction quality. Double-stitched seams, preshrunk fabrics, colorfast dyes — these are not just quality features. They are sustainability features. The longer a Dwell product stays in your bathroom, the smaller its footprint becomes over time.

Our Goals

We believe in setting concrete targets and being honest about our progress. Here is where we are headed:

  • 2025 — Introduce compostable mailers for all orders under 2lbs and achieve carbon-neutral shipping across all US domestic orders through verified offset partnerships
  • 2026 — Launch a take-back program allowing customers to return worn Dwell products for responsible recycling or repurposing rather than sending them to landfill
  • 2027 — Transition 50% of our cotton supply to certified organic cotton, reducing pesticide use in our supply chain significantly
  • 2028 — Publish our first full sustainability impact report with independently verified data across our entire supply chain

A Note From Our Founder

"When I started Dwell, I wanted to build a brand that I could feel genuinely good about — not just in terms of the products, but in terms of how they were made and what impact they had on the world. We are still a small company, and there are things we cannot yet do that larger brands can. But we hold ourselves to the same standard on sustainability that we hold our products to — keep raising the bar, be honest about where you are, and never stop improving."

— James Calloway, Founder & CEO, Dwell
