About Us

We started Dwell because of a product.

It sounds like a small thing. But if you have ever stepped out of the shower and reached for a towel that scratches, barely absorbs, and looks worn out after three washes — you know exactly how much it matters. That is the moment Dwell was born.

It was 2019, and our founder, James Calloway, had just moved into his first real apartment in Portland, Oregon. He had spent weeks finding the right furniture, the right lighting, the right paint color for the walls. But when it came to the bathroom — towels, robes, a bath mat — he grabbed whatever was on the shelf at the nearest store without thinking twice. A few weeks later, he was already disappointed. The towels had gone stiff and thin. The robe had pilled. The bath mat had curled at the edges and lost its grip on the floor.

He went looking for something better and found that the options were either cheap and low quality or expensive and over-designed — full of branding and lifestyle marketing but short on actual substance. There was no brand that simply focused on making genuinely great bath essentials at a price that felt fair. So he decided to build one.

Building Dwell from the ground up

James spent the better part of two years researching materials, visiting mills, and testing products before Dwell launched its first collection in 2021. He worked directly with family-run textile mills in Portugal and Turkey — regions with centuries of cotton weaving tradition — to develop fabrics that met a very specific standard: soft from the first wash, absorbent without being heavy, and durable enough to hold up year after year.

The first Dwell collection was small — just four towel sizes, a bathrobe, and a bath mat. It launched quietly, with no big advertising campaign, just a simple website and a lot of faith in the products themselves. Within three months, the first run had sold out entirely on word of mouth alone. Customers were emailing to say they had finally found what they had been looking for. That was all the confirmation James needed.

What Dwell stands for

From day one, Dwell has operated around a single idea: your bathroom should feel like the best part of your home. Not an afterthought. Not the room you furnish last with whatever is left in the budget. The bathroom is where your day begins and where it ends. It is the most personal space in your home — and it deserves products that are actually worth reaching for.

Every product we make is built around that belief. We do not chase trends. We do not cut corners on materials to hit a lower price point. We do not put our name on anything we would not genuinely want in our own bathrooms. If it does not feel exceptional, it does not ship.

Where we are today

Dwell is now a team of fourteen people based in Portland, Oregon, with a small sourcing office in Lisbon, Portugal. We have grown from four products to a full bath collection that includes towels, robes, bath mats, shower curtains, and bath accessories. We ship across the United States and are working toward international shipping in the near future.

But the thing that matters most to us has not changed since day one. Every morning, somewhere in America, someone steps out of the shower and reaches for a Dwell towel. We think about that moment every single time we make a product decision. It is the standard everything gets held to — and it is the reason we are still here.

Thank you for being part of it.
